Students will often benefit from sentence starters in order to guide their organization, jump start their thinking, or promote positive peer interactions during discussions.
Example:
A teacher who asks her students to debate a topic teaches them sentence stems or starters in order to ensure that discourse is civil and that students are able to organize their thoughts verbally. They would then have access to the same sentence starters when writing.
