Through the use of multilingual texts, emergent bilingual students are given the opportunity to access the content in their home language before being exposed to it in the target language.

Example:

The teacher can have the student look over a home language text during independent reading and then do a class read aloud in the target language. Emerging bilingual students can continue to follow along with the home language version or they can listen to the target language version. As an extension, the teacher could also preview any questions about the text so that the child can be prepared to share them during the whole group session. Many popular texts are readily available in multiple languages.
