Multilingual sentence starter cards can support students with disabilities and emerging bilinguals with content area discussions.

Example:

Participating in discussions can be challenging for students with disabilities and emerging bilinguals.  Offering sentence starters with teacher selected discipline-specific words that will be a valuable support for student in discussions. These cards can be of individual words that will support discussion, or, for students in need of more language support, can be expanded into sentence frames. For emerging bilinguals, sentence frames should be provided in both English and their home language to support their growth. Images can be added to the backs of the cards for additional support. Cards also can be hole-punched and put on a ring so students can use them easily during discussions.
