Before submitting an assignment, ask students to complete a self score using the same rubric you will use for grading.

Example:

At the end of a writing unit on narrative fiction, provide students with the rubric that will be used to score their work.  Ask them to take some time and score their own writing using this rubric.  Tell them to provide any feedback they think is necessary at the bottom of the rubric.
