At the end of each writing unit, have students analyze their scored writing to develop personal goals for the next unit.
Example:
Provide examples of goals that can carry across writing units, such as I will use adjectives to paint a picture for my reader or I will be sure to put a period at the end of every sentence. Once students understand how to write a goal, ask them to look at their scored writing and create their own goals for the next writing assignment. Add these self generated goals to the student’s rubric.
