Students can be given the opportunity to choose their own partners for group work, especially based on shared home culture and language, allowing students to use their common knowledge to gain cross-cultural understandings.

Students were allowed to self-select their partners.  Many students chose to work in groups based on the same language or culture, allowing students to particularly focus on the tasks of retelling and recording.  In presenting their projects, students made linguistic choices depending on the needs of the audience. For example, some groups presented in monolingually while others presented multilingually.
