When teaching in a content area, consider using several text options that touch on the same topic and allow your students to pick which article they wish to read.

Example:

When teaching a unit on slavery, offer students the option to read either a section of a slave memoir, an informational text about a slave auction, an article detailing the daily life of the slave or another primary document about a slave purchase.   After students read their selected text, group students together to discuss the information from their text.
