Students can be invited to bring in oral stories, such as folktales, for literary or cultural analysis, expanding the range of text types and providing cultural relevance for students.

Example:

Students can act as anthropologists, drawing upon oral texts that they bring in to retell.  During a lesson, students can be encouraged to explore folktales from their cultures with a focus on the language used to tell these stories. The lesson could culminate in a poster of their self-selected folktale depicted on a narrative arc.
